In October 2024 I facilitated a workshop on coding for sound and moving images as part of Experimental Sound Studio’s Patchbent Sessions. Patchbent Sessions are a meeting place and learning community for women, trans, and non-binary people. Each session features a workshop in sound technology.
The following winter ESS reached back out about re-designing the identity for the series. I had so much fun exploring concepts around bending patches, cables, and shape shifting typography. Ultimately, we went in the direction of using Benoît Bodhuin’s Ballpill typeface, a techy but playful sans-serif with details reminiscent of buttons and cables.
The font is customized to reflect the concept of intersecting node structures. The mark resembles classic synth logos paired with a vibrant color palette that evokes LEDs and circuit boards. The identity aims to communicate that Patchbent Sessions are spaces for gathering and fostering connections.
Thanks to Kate, Olivia, and all the folks at ESS for the opportunity to jam on this together.
